Pacific Islands Forum Troika Meeting on Regional Priorities.

Nukuʻalofa, Tonga – The Honourable Prime Minister, Lord Fakafanua, departs for Australia today to attend the annual Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Troika Meeting, to be held in Brisbane on Tuesday, 27 January.

The meeting will bring together the three Troika leaders, which includes the current Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum and Prime Minister of Solomon Islands, the Honourable Jeremiah Manele; the former Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum and Prime Minister of Tonga; and the next Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum, President of the Republic of Palau, Surangel S. Whipps.

While in Australia, Prime Minister will hold a bilateral meeting with Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator the Hon Penny Wong and the Minister for Climate Change and Energy, the Hon Chris Bowen MP. The meetings will include the signing of the TONGA–AUSTRALIA RENEWABLE ENERGY AND CLIMATE PARTNERSHIP MOU in support of Tonga’s energy roadmap to achieve 100% renewable energy through targeted assistance and partnerships on focused areas of support.

The Prime Minister will take the opportunity to engage with members of the Tongan diaspora on the sidelines of the TROIKA meetings in Brisbane.

The Prime Minister is also scheduled to hold high-level meetings with the Prime Minister of New Zealand, the Right Honourable Christopher Luxon, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Right Honourable Winston Peters during his transit through Auckland, New Zealand.
