Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua, held a bilateral meeting with Endurance Energy Strategy Inc. of the United States of America
On the sidelines of the Pacific Agenda Summit in Hawai‘i, the Honourable Prime Minister and Minister for MEIDECC, Lord Fakafanua, held a bilateral meeting with Endurance Energy Strategy Inc. of the United States of America, during which a Memorandum of Understanding was signed to advance cooperation in the exploration, development, and deployment of subsea geothermal energy. The MoU will support Tonga’s energy sector and the expansion of renewable energy solutions, from on-grid to off-grid and mini-grid electrification, including partial subsidies and technical assistance to other sectors. Tonga’s energy sector aims to provide services to the people of Tonga that are clean, reliable, and affordable, while harnessing intermittent renewable sources such as solar and wind. The Tonga Energy Road Map 2021–2035 sets a target of 100% renewable energy by 2035, aiming to phase out fossil fuels entirely for electricity generation. Achieving this goal will require both a new primary source of firm renewable energy, such as biofuel, biomass, geothermal, or ocean energy, and advanced energy storage technologies to ensure grid stability and reliability.
