Press Conference Provides Clarity on Tonga’s Energy and Fuel Supply.

The Prime Minister’s Office and MEIDECC hosted a press conference this morning to address public concerns regarding Tonga’s energy and fuel supply further providing clarity and reassurance on the current situation.

KEY POINTS –

Current Fuel Status:

• Tonga is currently in a “Green” status, meaning there is sufficient fuel supply available for the coming months, thus there is no need for panic or queuing at petrol stations. The Government is reviewing the status levels daily.

• The most recent fuel shipment arrived on 10 March 2026, with the next shipments scheduled for 24 March 2026 and 31 March 2026.

Public Safety and Fuel Storage:

• Petrol is a highly flammable and dangerous substance. Improper storage can lead to fires, explosions, serious injury, and loss of life and property.

• Under Petroleum Regulations, it is unlawful to store more than 15 litres of fuel in homes or residences, or more than 20 gallons in garages or storage facilities, due to fire safety risks.

• Larger quantities require a special licence and must meet strict safety conditions.

Government Monitoring and Response:

• The Government will conduct daily monitoring of fuel supply and distribution, with weekly public updates every Friday starting next week, until the situation stabilises.

• The Government is working closely with fuel businesses to ensure fair and equitable distribution of fuel nationwide.

Electricity Supply:

• Tonga Power has confirmed that there is sufficient and stable electricity supply for the country.

Long-Term Energy Strategy:

• Efforts to reduce reliance on fuel and diesel remain a priority.

• The Government has recently signed an MOU with a U.S.-based company to accelerate geothermal solutions,on top of ongoing plans for solar, wind and wave energy.

Public Information and Updates:

• The Prime Minister’s Office official platforms, together with the Energy Division of the Ministry of MEIDECC,the Ministry of Trade and Economic Development, the Competent Authority, the Ministry of Fire and Emergency Services, Tonga’s Energy Commission, and Tonga Power Ltd, will provide weekly updates starting today. The public is encouraged to rely on trusted sources of information.
