Australia assists Lulutai in servicing Vava’u

3 February 2023

Nuku’alofa – The Australian Government this morning signed a Memorandum of Agreement that confirms their assistance to the Government of Tonga through Lulutai Airways in servicing flights to Vava’u.

The Honourable Prime Minister Hu’akavameiliku signed the agreement on behalf of the Government of Tonga with the Head of the Office of the Pacific within Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr Ewen McDonald.

Lulutai Airways Chief Executive Officer Mr Poasi Tei then signed the operational agreement with the Australian High Commissioner to Tonga, Her Excellency Rachael Moore.

The Australian Government assistance will ensure that Fiji Airways, through its Pacific Link ATR aircraft, will service the Tongatapu- Vava’u route every week from now until June.

That will allow maintenance and repairs to the Lulutai Airways’ SAAB aircraft that is currently grounded.

The Hon Hu’akavameiliku stated at a press conference after the signing that the short term plan is being met by the Australian Government, while at the same time there are discussions on long term plans for the airline, which includes options for its fleet.
