“High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (SDG Summit)”

The Prime Minister of Tonga, Hon. Hu’akavameiliku, as part of his full schedule of engagements during the United Nations High-Level Week, which commenced today, 18 September 2023, participated in one event entitled “High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Develoment” (SDG Summit). This was held under the auspices of the United Nations General Assembly, specifically at the Leaders’ Dialogue on the topic of “Game-changers: Applying science, technology, innovation and date for transformative action”.
Emphasised in the Prime Minister’s statement were cost-effective ways and inclusivity offered when one ventured out through technological advancements, while equally placed emphasis on the need to do so with caution to ensure that all development projects are risk-informed to mitigate potentional detrimental effects on our environment and people’s well-being, leaving no one behind.
The Government of Tonga, in that regard is committed to leveraging science, technology, innovation, and data (STID) to speed up our progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a balanced way. Tonga is highly vulnerable to climate change, natural disaster, and other global challenges, it must therefore invest in the resilience of our system and people.
The Prime Minister informed that Tonga has already witnessed the transformative power of STID in action, such as utilizing solar and wind energy to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and improve energy security and employing digital technologies to improve resilience and access to education, healthcare, and community connectivity.
Tonga further leverages satellite data to monitor and manage our marine resources, to address IUU FISHING, developing early warning systems for natural disasters, and use digital technologies to enhance financial inclusion and reduce inequality and poverty. Tonga actively supports the development of innovative businesses and industries, fostering entrepreneurship and creating job opportunities.
In conclusion, the Prime Minister urges all member states to join Tonga in committing to harnessing the power of STID. This includes using satellite data for marine resource management, IUU fishing developing early warning systems for natural disasters, improving access to financial services through digital technologies, and supporting the growth of innovative businesses and industries. And to be mindful of disformation and cyber security issues, for Only TOGETHER will we able to achieve the SDGs and build a better future for all.
