“Government Budget FY 2025- FY 2027 – Key Initiatives to Support the Health Sector”

Nuku’alofa, Tonga – During his Budget Speech at the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, the Minister of Finance, Hon. Tiofilusi Tiueti, announced a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing support health sector. Efforts are taken to improve the standard of healthcare in Tonga, include enhancing the safety and resilience of the health infrastructure. A total of $78.9 million is allocated to support the implementation of activities under the ‘Government Priority Agenda 5: Improving access to quality and affordable healthcare’. These initiatives are listed below.
- Multi-Sectoral Response to the NCD Crisis, aligned with Tonga’s National Strategy for the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (2021-2025).
- Vava’u Hospital.
- Queen Salote Nursing School – to increase enrolment in nursing school.
- Dialysis Unit under the Ministry of Health (MOH) – starting in Vaini Health Centre.
- Enhancements align with ongoing health programs targeting non-communicable diseases (NCDs), communicable diseases, and other health challenges, contributing to the sector’s overall growth.
- Continuation of school breakfast.
- E – Health project targets to train Ministry of Health officers, practitioners, and nurses on the e-Government system.
The Government of Tonga remains dedicated to supporting the economic growth and development through enhancing the health sector to improve provision of healthcare services for the betterment of all citizens.
