“His Majesty King Tupou VI appoints Hon. Dr. ‘Aisake Valu Eke as Prime Minister of Tonga”

Nuku’alofa, 22 January, 2025:-His Majesty King Tupou VI, today, Wednesday 22 January 2025, at the Royal Palace, Nuku’alofa has appointed Honourable Dr. ‘Aisake Valu Eke as the Prime Minister Tonga. This is in accordance with Clause 50A (1) of the Act of the Constitution of Tonga. Hon Dr Eke is the 19th Prime Minister for the Kingdom of Tonga.

Hon Dr. Eke was elected the Prime Minister Designate at the Legislative Assembly of Tonga on the 24th of December, 2024. He is the Member of Parliament for Tongatapu No.5 Constituency.

Hon Dr. Eke is a well-known career public servant official of the Government of Tonga, serving nearly two decades at the Ministry of Finance and National Planning. He was appointed as Secretary for Finance/CEO for Finance for several years before he resigned and started his political career in 2010.

He was appointed as Minister for Finance from 2014 to 2017. While in Government, he was involved in Government projects and reforms and represented the Government at Regional and International meetings.

Dr. Eke holds a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in Business Administration from the University of Southern Queensland, a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Monash University in Australia, and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Accounting and Economics from the University of the South Pacific in Fiji. He is also a member of the Chartered Public Accountants (CPA) of the Australian Society of Accountants.

Dr. Eke was born on September 26, 1960, in the village of Vaotu’u in the western district of Tongatapu. He is married to Lusitania Latu Eke, and they have two children.

The Government of Tonga officially welcomes Hon Dr Eke as Prime Minister of Tonga and looks forward to his leadership and guidance, during his time in Office.
