“Hon Hu’akavameiliku remains Prime Minister”

6 September 2023

Tongan Prime Minister Hon Hu’akavameiliku defeated the vote of no confidence (VONC) motion against him this week.

He received 14 votes to 11.

Dr. ‘Aisake Eke, member of Parliament for Constituency No. 5, had filed the vote of no confidence last week with 46 issues they had raised to support their call.

Members of Parliament voted in the House today, Wednesday 6 September, 2023.

Hon Huakavameiliku said he was happy the issue has been dealt with and he and government can continue to do the work they were elected to do.

“The right for VONC is provided for in the Constitution of Tonga but it has been very disruptive. I am grateful that it has been dealt with and we can move on to working for the country and her people,” he said.

Hon. Hu’akavameiliku said the VONC also provided an opportunity to clarify misunderstanding, address misinformation and raise awareness about key issues raised.
