Hon. Prime Minister commissioned Hahake’s Coastal Protection seawall
The Hon. Prime Minister Dr. Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa on Monday 18 November 2019 commissioned the Hahake’s Coastal Protection seawall at Nautoka Village.
Mr. Paula Ma’u, the CEO for MEIDECC in his speech said, “This was the first large scale climate resilient project Government has contributed to”.
This multi-million pa’anga Climate Resilience Sector Project was funded with a grant money of US$19.25 million from the Asian Development Bank and contributing to the total amount of US$23.13 was the Government of Tonga.
The aim of the project is to support the low-lying vulnerable areas on the Eastern District of Hahake in Tongatapu with a seawall of 2.305 km long, providing coastal protection for Nautoka and Manuka villages.
ADB’s Senior Country Co-ordination Officer, Mr. Tatafu Moeaki, commended on the Government of Tonga and MEIDECC for their important vision in projects such as these. He also mentioned in his speech that there were other works to be done and that this was just a small portion.
After the commissioning the locals celebrated with dancing and a feast.
