Hon Prime Minister meets The United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction

Nuku’alofa:- The Prime Minister of Tonga, Hon. Hu’akavameiliku, held a bilateral meeting with the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, H.E Ms Mami Mizutori, on Friday 20 October, 2023.

The Prime Minister expressed his appreciation to Her Excellency, also head of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDDR), for all efforts UNDDR in support Tonga’s to achieve the outcomes of the Sendai Framework.

Hon Hu’akavameiliku shared Tonga’s great progress in strengthening DRM legislation and policy, particularly the enactment of DRM Act 2021, which covers all phases of Disaster Management and puts into place robust governance arrangements to support Tonga’s vision towards enhancing preparedness and effective response.

Tonga is the second most vulnerable country in the world to natural disasters.
