The two leaders, both former Speakers of Parliament, exchanged congratulations and acknowledged the enduring friendship between Tonga and Samoa, recalling the close ties nurtured by the Late Malietoa and His Majesty Tupou IV.
During the conversation, they discussed opportunities to further strengthen bilateral relations, including expanding inter-island trade, beginning with Tongan produce such as watermelons and cassava. The potential for establishing direct flights between Nuku’alofa and Apia was also explored, with both leaders expressing strong support for the initiative.
Prime Minister Schmidt extended an invitation to Lord Fakafanua to attend Samoa’s Flag Day celebrations, which Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua warmly received.
